The Flip Journal is a brand-new notebook type in CanJournals: the whole journal becomes a little book you flip through page by page. For details on regular notebooks, click here: Notebooks
What is a Flip Journal?
A regular notebook shows its pages in a waterfall layout by default, while a Flip Journal is presented as a "real little book": it has a cover, you flip through the pages from left to right just like a paper journal, and tapping a page opens it for editing.
Besides the flip book form, Flip Journals also support the accordion fold and other display styles. See "Display Modes" below for details.
How to Create a Flip Journal
- Tap the "+" button on the journal page to open the notebook creation screen
- In the bottom settings panel (above "Title Sticker"), find the "Flip Journal" toggle
- Turn the toggle on to create a Flip Journal; tap the "?" icon next to it to see a short explanation of the mode
- All other settings (notebook name, cover image, solid-color cover, title sticker, watermark) are exactly the same as a regular notebook
- Tap confirm, and your Flip Journal will be created
⚠️ Note: the notebook type cannot be changed after creation. The "Flip Journal" toggle only appears when creating; you cannot convert a regular notebook into a Flip Journal (or vice versa) later when editing.
Display Modes
Flip Journals support 5 display modes. Tap the layout switcher button at the top of the journal detail page to cycle through them in order:
- Flip Book (default): presented as a little book with a cover; flip through pages left and right, tap a page to edit it
- Accordion: the whole journal unfolds like one long accordion-folded paper strip; swipe sideways to browse it flat
- Waterfall: two-column waterfall layout
- List: single-column list with drag-to-sort support
- Gallery: browse pages as large gallery images
Regular notebooks support 4 modes: waterfall, list, book (3D flip), and gallery. Book mode (3D) is exclusive to regular notebooks; flip book and accordion are exclusive to Flip Journals.
Page Rules Inside a Flip Journal
To keep every page in the same standard TN size so the book flips neatly, Flip Journals follow these page rules:
- Only standard TN template pages can be added: when you tap "+" to add a page, the template list only shows standard TN templates
- No passport-size (short TN) templates: passport templates used by Rapid Record do not appear in the template picker
- No Modular (blank) pages: you cannot create blank pages inside a Flip Journal, nor convert a template page into a modular page
- No Rapid Record: all Rapid Record entries are hidden inside a Flip Journal
- Moving pages is restricted: when moving a page to another notebook, a Flip Journal that is incompatible with the page (not a standard TN template page) is shown as unselectable
Copying pages, favoriting templates, the material center, and exports (PDF/images/Zine) are unaffected and work as usual.
Zine Export
In flip book mode, an extra "Zine export" button appears at the top of the journal detail page. It renders the whole journal into one long Zine-style share image. Zine export is a premium pass benefit; if you are not subscribed, a subscription prompt will appear.
The regular export entry (PDF, etc.) is not affected by the display mode and is available in every mode.
